Skrillex, Foster The People Remember 1991: When Rock Rocked1670110

With the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind around the corner, today's biggest acts recall 1991's other classic albums.

In a few short weeks, Nirvana's epochal Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that will be marked with much coverage, celebration and consternation in the media — and understandably so. After all, it was a game-changer in every sense of the term, the kind of album that brought about seismic shifts in music, fashion and culture in general, one that defined a generation and, as such, deserves to be mythologized. And, in the coming weeks, we suspect you'll see no shortage of stories that do just that.

While Nevermind casts an indelibly lengthy shadow, it bears mention that there were no shortage of other magical, massive and equally mythological albums that hit stores in 1991 — from mega-platinum rock blockbusters to best-kept indie secrets, and just about everything in between — classics that, had Nirvana never broken through, would probably be getting the royal treatment right now. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we've asked some of today's biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year. On Wednesday, we heard from Death Cab for Cutie and Blink-182; now, Skrillex and Foster the People share their faves. Don't worry, we'll give Nevermind its due — but right now, we're paying tribute to 1991's other indispensible albums, in the words of their biggest fans. Metallica, The Black Album
The one where "old" Metallica ended and "new" Metallica began — at least according to the die-hards — the band's fifth studio album (it's technically self-titled, though, come on, who doesn't call it The Black Album?) saw them drifting away from their slash-and-burn thrash-metal past into a new, decidedly fuller phase, one fleshed out with orchestral flourishes and an increased focus on the booming rhythm section of Jason Newstead and Lars Ulrich. Though its recording was plagued by battles with producer Bob Rock, The Black Album features the band's most iconic songs — "Enter Sandman," "The Unforgiven," "Nothing Else Matters," etc. — and remains their best-selling to date, moving a staggering 22 million copies worldwide. Love it or hate it, you can't deny its impact, both on the band and the next two decades of hard rock. As Remembered by Skrillex: "Man, The Black Album was me sitting in my room when I was 9 years old, trying to learn all the songs on guitar. That was, for me, rocking out, no reservations, like I was on the stage. And learning the 'Holier Than Thou' riff was, like, the biggest achievement, because it's so hard. Every record on that album is so amazing. ... Obviously, 'Enter Sandman,' 'Wherever I May Roam' ... that was the first Metallica song I learned, after 'Enter Sandman.' I love The Black Album. It's perfect; it's a masterpiece in every way, from front to back, and it's inspired me, consciously or subconsciously, because I had such a connection to it." Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik
One of the most important, celebrated albums of the '90s alt-rock explosion, Blood Sugar saw the Chili Peppers grow up, get deep and, of course, become hugely famous. While songs like "Give It Away" and "Suck My Kiss" still bobbed and weaved with the band's visceral energy, it was on tracks like the massive "Under the Bridge" and "Breaking the Girl" where they slowed things down and found their biggest commercial successes. Recorded by producer Rick Rubin in a supposedly haunted mansion in Laurel Canyon, its creation has become the stuff of rock legend, and though the Peppers would subsequently sag beneath its success (guitarist John Frusciante, unable to cope with his sudden fame, quit the band mid-tour), Blood Sugar still stands as perhaps the finest accomplishment of their 28-year career. It would be nearly four years before they released a follow-up, though, given the album's hugely influential status, you really couldn't blame them. As Remembered by Mark Pontius, Foster the People: "My favorite record of 1991, and I think the only reason I got this record was my sister had it, and she's older than me, so it just sort of fell into my lap, is Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I think I have to credit that record [for teaching me] a lot of my drumming skills. I loved playing their records, and that one always stuck out to me. It had so much grit, and that was rock and roll at that time of my life." What is your favorite 1991 rock album? Let us know in the comments below! For more on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, head over to the Newsroom blog, where Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis tells us his favorite memories of making the iconic album!

Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Hudson Added To Michael Forever Tribute1671252

As the October 8 date approaches, the Michael Forever tribute concert in Cardiff, Wales, in honor of late pop icon Michael Jackson has added two more headliners. On Friday (September 23), the Black Eyed Peas joined a lineup that is also slated to feature performances by Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Leona Lewis, Ne-Yo, Craig David, Pixie Lott, Alexandra Burke, Alien Ant Farm and Motown legend Smokey Robinson. The show, which is being presented by Jackson's mother, Katherine, along with some but not all of the King of Pop's siblings (and without the sanction of his estate), will be hosted by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. Pregnant pop queen Beyoncé will appear in some form at the show via a pre-taped satellite segment. A press release also announced that Oscar-winning singer Jennifer Hudson has been added to the lineup as well. In a statement, Peas co-founder will.i.am — who spent time in the studio with Jackson prior to the singer's June 2009 death — said of his band's participation, "This show is going to be an incredibly personal and moving evening for me. Remember that Michael's music, his great, great songs, have been an inspiration to my whole life and certainly formed the soundtrack to my childhood. When I was a little kid of six or seven growing up in Los Angeles, there was Michael recording Thriller, and all his early hits, just a few miles away across town — obviously I didn't know him at that time, but I loved him as a fan." One of the members of the original Jackson Five, sibling Marlon Jackson, will be on hand, and he expressed his excitement about the addition of the Peas. "We're all really delighted and touched that the Black Eyed Peas are able to come and take part " he said. "My brother rated Will.i.am and the original things he does in music very highly. I guess you could say it was a case of mutual respect." Some members of the Jackson family, including siblings Janet, Jermaine and Randy, have complained about the timing of the show, which will take place in the midst of the manslaughter trial of Jackson's physician Dr. Conrad Murray.

Things only really started to heat up between them several weeks ago.” While Chase and Messing could be in the beginning stages of what some are saying a serious relationship, Chase is said to still be married to stage actress Stephanie Gibson, the pair just split this month. It's almost that time to ring in the new year, and what better way to do so than with MTV? "NYE in NYC 2012" will air live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday from Times Square, hosted by Demi Lovato and Tyler Posey of "Teen Wolf."

Also on hand to count down will be some of music's biggest stars, including J. Cole, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez and Jason Derülo, who will be performing in our Times Square studios.

"I cannot think of another way to bring the new year in than with MTV." Derülo told MTV News. "I'm excited — new year, new beginnings."

Derülo plans to excite the crowd with two hit songs from his sophomore album, Future History, which was released earlier this year.

"I'll be doing 'It Girl' and 'Don't Wanna Go Home,' a medley of the two," Derülo revealed. "[There will] be a lot of high-energy dancing."

Derülo isn't just gearing up for his own performance, he's excited to see what his fellow performers have in store for the big night.

"It's going to be a crazy show, I hope you guys are tuning in because lots of great performers," Derülo said. "You have different flavors from all around."

Of course, with a new year comes a new resolution, so what will Derülo be doing differently in 2012? "Not being late to a lot of places." Derülo said. "I don't want to say I'm usually late; I'm fashionably late. I think being 20 minutes is a little too much, but if you're in the 15 margin, I think you're golden."

Fans can go to our "NYE in NYC 2012" page to take a look back at past MTV New Year's bashes and this year's biggest highlights.

Don't miss MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," kicking off at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday, New Year's Eve.

The Peas and Swift took to Twitter to apologize to fans after a star-studded NYC charity show was postponed due to bad weather on Thursday.

The weather just didn't want to cooperate with the Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and the other artists slated to perform in New York's Central Park on Thursday night at a concert to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation anti-poverty organization. After a number of delays, and before anyone could take the stage, the Concert 4 NYC had been canceled. The show, which had been slated to take place on Central Park's Great Lawn and was expected to draw an audience of approximately 60,000 fans, initially was just delayed but concert promoters eventually decided to pull the plug on the event as the weather worsened and thunder and rain rolled in, Billboard.com reports. Among the other acts that had been scheduled to perform were Debbie Harry, LL Cool J and Natasha Bedingfield. A rep for the concert has confirmed to MTV News that no new date has been scheduled. In a statement, the Robin Hood Foundation said, "The heat wasn't going to stop them, the rain wasn't going to stop them, but the lightning — it stopped them. It came down to safety for everyone. Organizers are hoping to reschedule, so ticket buyers should hold onto their tickets. Robinhood.org will have information in the next week or so." The artists themselves also have apologized to fans for the cancelation. Swift tweeted, "I was like 'I get to sing with Fergie in NYC?!' and then there was rain and lightning and they're like 'it's cancelled' and I was like [sad emoticon]." The Black Eyed Peas, who reportedly performed an intimate show backstage for fans, also took to Twitter to posted about the nixed concert. "I'm so sad the show got postponed," will.i.am wrote. "Fergie is really sorry it's not happening we feel horrible," Taboo added on his Twitter page. "We are devastated and Fergie told me to tweet this she loves u all ... I hope that the concert will be rescheduled ASAP, our pea-ple deserve it, my pea-ple from chase and robinhood deserve this NYC we love u."

Katy Perry And Russell Brand: A Timeline

We take a look back at the divorcing couple's whirlwind relationship and rumor-plagued marriage.
By John Mitchell

Fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand were sad to hear Friday that the Gammy-nominated pop star and her actor/comedian husband were divorcing after just 14 months of marriage. Theirs was a whirlwind romance: They were engaged less than four months after they started dating, were married 10 months later in an elaborate ceremony in India, and now, after months of endless baby and breakup rumors, are parting ways.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," Brand said in a statement. "I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

Like so many Hollywood couples before them, their flame burned hot and fast. Here's a look back at the many milestone moments in Perry and Brand's relationship.

September 7, 2008: Brand met Perry when he was hosting the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. "Get Him to the Greek" director Nick Stoller set up a shoot at the VMAs to snag some fun celebrity cameos for the film, in which the British comedian stars. Stoller lined up Christina Aguilera, Pink and Perry, who had immediate chemistry with Brand. Later, following Perry's performance of "I Kissed a Girl" at the VMAs, Brand joked, "I was so inspired by Katy Perry's song's message that I'm currently going through nine ChapSticks a day and my penis has never felt more moisturized." There was only one problem: Perry wasn't single — she was still dating Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy.

September 13, 2009: A year later, at the 2009 VMAs, however, was a very different story. Perry and McCoy had parted ways, and longtime ladies' man Brand, who was back for his second time as host, was single as well when both returned to the VMA stage. They flirted their way through rehearsals for the show, and rumors that they were an item began soon thereafter.

October 7, 2009: Though things reportedly got hot and heavy pretty quickly after the VMAs, Perry and Brand were not spotted together publicly for nearly three weeks, making their debut as a couple at a Fendi party at Paris Fashion Week.

December 31, 2009: On an extended holiday vacation, Brand proposed on New Year's Eve at a tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, and Perry said yes. A week earlier, while visiting the Taj Mahal, she tweeted, "He built this for me. So when do I start walking the streets naked singing that Alanis song?" (meaning "Thank U," about time Alanis Morissette spent in India).

August 2010: Talking to Rolling Stone while promoting her multiplatinum, hit-machine record Teenage Dream, Perry admitted her religious upbringing sometimes caused conflict between herself and Brand. "I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord's name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth," she told the mag. "I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen."

October 23, 2010: Perry and Brand get married in an elaborate ceremony at the Aman-i-Khas luxury resort in India, adjacent to the tiger sanctuary where he proposed. The wedding capped off days of festivities in the couple's honor, including a Bollywood-themed party and tours of the sanctuary. "Russell Brand and Katy Perry are overjoyed to confirm that they were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Brand on Saturday, October 23," the couple said in a statement to MTV News. "The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couples' closest family and friends, was performed by a Christian minister and longtime friend of the Hudson Family [Katy's maiden name]. The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of Northern India."

April 7, 2011: During a co-hosting stint on "Live With Regis and Kelly," Brand says he and Perry are as happy as can be despite ongoing rumors to the contrary, but admits that the constant attention from the paparazzi does put stress on their relationship.

Katy Perry was chosen as MTV's 2011 Artist of the Year.

November 11, 2011: Appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to tout the end of her successful California Dreams Tour, Perry told DeGeneres she wanted kids with Russell. "I would love to have children. I think that's one of the reasons you get married, and especially to the person that you marry. You think, 'Hmmm, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent,' " Perry said. "But I'm not sure it's yet. We'll see, you know?" During the sit-down, she admitted that she and Brand worked hard to see each other while she was on tour but that it was often a challenge. "Two weeks, that's the longest we ever go. Anything longer than that is not fun."

November 22, 2011: On the heels of taking home a special award for having scored five #1 singles from one album (Teenage Dream) at the American Music Awards, Perry was forced to respond to fashionistas claiming she was sporting a small baby bump under her pink dress, telling Hollyscoop, "Hell no!" when asked if children were in her near future.

November 30, 2011: Just days after the pregnancy chatter began to die down, rumors that the pair were through began to crop up across the Internet, forcing Perry to take to Twitter to deny the divorce rumblings. "First I'm pregnant & then I'm divorced. What am I 'All My Children'?! #ericakane #pshhh #ifihadadollarforeverytime," she tweeted.

December 2, 2011: It was Russell's turn to address the rumors when he visited "Ellen" earlier this month. Denying the split, the British comic said, "I've treated the whole Internet now like it's a wicked little liar. Yeah. I am really happily married. I'm married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."

December 25, 2011: Katy was spotted splashing around in the ocean in Hawaii without Russell and not wearing her wedding ring. Just days later, Brand's ring finger was bare when photographers caught him out walking in London.

December 30, 2011: With the new year looming, Brand filed for divorce from Perry in Los Angeles Superior Court citing "irreconcilable differences." No separation date was given, and representatives for Brand and Perry have not yet responded to requests for further comment.

Pam Behan: Kardashian Tell All Book

Former nanny, Pam Behan is writing a tell all book on her former clients, the Kardashian?s and Jenner?s. Seems this lady has a lot to say! When it rains it pours, the Kardashian?s are going down! Lol. Ok this will only help them stay relevant and in the spotlight, but hey, it is guaranteed to be a good read, though I am sure we know most of it. Former nanny to the Kardashian and Jenner kids, Pam Behan, is writing a tell all that will go into detail about her time working for the family and it sounds like she is going into great detail, calling Bruce?s two boys, Brandon and Brody ?Spoiled and disrespectful.? Duh. We already knew that. Though the three Kardashian sisters are said to be fond of Pam, she is also dishing dirt on them, and promises to give juicy deets about Kimmy. As for the parents, ?Pam has a “love/hate” relationship with Kris but a soft spot for Bruce, who helped her get out of a DUI.? How kind. So really who cares, we know all this stuff already but I am sure there will be a few things we can enjoy and laugh about. [...]

Britney Spears, Jason Trawick: A Timeline Of Their Love1676167

The couple started dating in 2009 while Trawick was still Britney's agent.

Months ago, rumors began circulating that Britney Spears and longtime boyfriend Jason Trawick were going to tie the knot. And on Friday (December 16), sources close to the pair and a mysterious tweet from the star herself confirmed that the couple is engaged.

Trawick had already been working with the star as her agent at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment when they began dating in 2009. They went public with their romance when they showed up hand-in-hand to the 2010 Grammy Awards. That May, the two decided to separate their business and personal relationships, and it was confirmed that Trawick would no longer be representing Spears. The pair have always been pretty low-key. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest this March, the pop star opened up about their life together. "We're really normal," she said. "We just like to watch movies; we work out a lot; we take walks." In May, Spears told Harper's Bazaar, "I've thought about both [marriage and kids]," saying that tying the knot with Trawick could happen "if the timing was right." And in an interview with Us Weekly in April, Spears gushed about life with Trawick. "We have such a great time together! He makes me laugh, and we are so comfortable being ourselves," she said. "Maybe [I'll marry again]. Never say never!"

In August, Spears and Trawick walked the red carpet at the 2011 MTV VMAs, and Britney later thanked Trawick when she took the stage to accept her Moonman for Best Pop Video for "Till the World Ends." While the two have remained relatively private, they gave fans a peek at their personal life when they played the lead roles in Britney's "Criminal" video. The video focuses on a fictional love affair between their characters, who go on a crime spree that leads to a steamy encounter. Director Chris Marrs Piliero said Trawick "killed it." This will be Britney's third marriage. She was married to Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004. Later that year, she married back-up dancer Kevin Federline; the two divorced in 2006. Federline and Spears have two sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston. A rep for the singer has yet to confirm the news of this latest engagement to MTV News. Send your well-wishes to Britney and Jason in the comments.

Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover 'An Emotional Purging'1676260

Pop singer sings 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' for Amnesty International anniversary album.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ke$ha

It's hard to associate Ke$ha with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's Chimes of Freedom compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24.

When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her all-star remix of "Sleazy," she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." "I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and ... one of the most amazing lyricists as well — the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have." K's version of Dylan's song is a slow-burning, heartbreaking ode to the already heartbreaking classic, where she channels Dylan through lyrics like "Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say/ To try and make me change my mind and stay/ We never did too much talkin' anyway/ So don't think twice, it's all right."

Ke$ha had originally intended to record another Dylan track, but when she heard that someone else had their sights set on it, she settled on "Don't Think Twice," prompting a catharsis she could never have imagined. "This song was kind of an accident. I sat down and this is the first take that I ever sang," she recalled. "I just sat down on my bed for the first time after months of being on tour and I just started crying, and it was kind of like an emotional purging, and you can hear it on the record." In addition to Ke$ha and her contribution, the album will feature 75 other Dylan classics recorded by nearly 80 artists including Adele, Miley Cyrus, "Glee" star Darren Criss, My Chemical Romance, Evan Rachel Wood and Sugarland. The album pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.

Black Eyed Peas Go On Hiatus After Star-Studded Miami Show1674955

The Black Eyed Peas had a lot to be thankful for on Thursday, namely, a major break from nearly non-stop touring and recording. The multiplatinum group announced before their show on Wednesday night at Miami's Sun Life Stadium that they were going on indefinite hiatus to work on other projects. "Tonight is our graduation. It's a very special night for all of us," singer Fergie announced at the gig. "We're so thankful to be sharing this night together." The band didn't go into the good night all alone, though, as they packed the show with appearances from a number of pals, including T-Pain, Sean Kingston, Cee Lo Green, Jason DeRulo and Queen Latifah. The past 10 months have been action packed for the hip-pop act, as they played the Super Bowl halftime show
in February, recorded a video for Japanese tsunami relief in March and played the iHeartRadio Festival in July. They were slated to perform at the Michael Jackson Forever tribute concert
in Cardiff, Wales, last month, but scratched at the last minute due to "unavoidable circumstances." They made it official with an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Wednesday morning, during which Will said that they "always have two cycles of records and then we take a break." He explained that the quartet has lasted this long because they often take breaks to work on solo projects and get their personal lives in order and then come back and "make beautiful music." It's not like the Peas will be off the map entirely after three years of touring in support of The Beginning and The E.N.D. will.i.am just released a new single from his upcoming solo album, #willpower, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger, entitled "T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)." Taboo plans to spend more time with his family and promote his book, "Falling Up," while apl.de.ap will reportedly focus on being an education ambassador in the Philippines and Fergie will do more solo recording and perhaps start a family.

Want to know what it's like to be in the Black Eyed Peas? The new video for the group's track "Don't Stop the Party," which hit the Internet on Wednesday, is giving fans a bird's-eye view of life on the road. A mix of concert shots, behind-the-scenes footage and studio footage, it all blends together to paint a picture of life as a Black Eyed Pea. When they aren't onstage, the bandmembers are seen partying and having a good time dancing around. The song is the third single off The Beginning. Produced by DJ Ammo and will.i.am, it's a full-on club banger, much like previous singles "The Time (Dirty Bit)" and "Just Can't Get Enough." The video for the latter helped raise funds for Japanese disaster relief after the tsunami. The track features heavy club beats, Auto-Tune and lots of house music elements, something that the team intended to include on the album as a whole. "The E.N.D. was a zeitgeist of the time, articulating that it's the end of the era," will.i.am told MTV News last year. "We're still passionate about music, so The Beginning [is] utilizing all the technologies, doing new things. Stuff like that, that's The Beginning." With its behind-the scenes shots, the video for "Don't Stop the Party" certainly sheds some light on how the album was made. "I mean, you have to realize this album was made on tour," Fergie said. "Basically these guys have hotel rooms with studios in them. Now technology has allowed us to make albums in hotel rooms. They'd leave their doors open, and I'd walk in [and just start singing]."

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters Announces The Wall Tour1635892

Band's co-founder celebrates the album's 30th anniversary on the road this fall.

Three decades after Pink Floyd's epic double-album head trip, The Wall, blew a generation's mind, the band's co-founder Roger Waters will perform the entire rock opera in concert again on an upcoming tour. Waters left Pink Floyd in 1984 but has continued to perform his iconic songs as a solo artist for years. The Wall tour will mark the 30th anniversary of the British psychedelic rockers' debut of the now legendary stage show for the ambitious album about isolation and madness. On the tour, Rogers has promised to perform an updated version of the original stage show, which included the construction of a massive white brick wall between the audience and performers during the course of the show. The band performed the album in its entirety on its 1980-1981 tour, and Waters revived it for a star-studded event in 1990 that was filmed in front of a massive 500,000-person audience to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany. Waters' 35-date solo tour will kick off on September 15 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and is slated to wrap up on December 13 in Anaheim, California. "Thirty years ago, when I wrote The Wall, I was a frightened young man," Waters said in an interview with Spinner.com. "It took me a long time to get over my fears. In the intervening years it has occurred to me that maybe the story of my fear and loss with its concomitant inevitable residue of ridicule, shame and punishment, provides an allegory for broader concerns: nationalism, racism, sexism, religion, whatever! All these issues and 'isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life." The album, one of the best selling of all time, features such classic rock radio staples as "Comfortably Numb," "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2," "Run Like Hell" and "Mother." Britney Spears Hosts As Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, More Bring Wango Tango To L.A.1663909

LOS ANGELESBritney Spears makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center.

The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Derülo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson. Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for the St. Bernard Project. Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011. Spears' Femme Fatale collaborator Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing. "That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her." While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower. "Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it." While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage. "I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything." Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement. "Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup." Were you at Wango Tango? Share your experience in the comments below!

Ben Affleck's a man of action now, isn't he? A few years ago, his career relegated him to romcom barf fests like "Gigli" and "Surviving Christmas." Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You: Don't Call It A 'Comeback'1669964

'What did we come back from? Malaria?' frontman Anthony Kiedis says of first album in five years.
By James Montgomery

In one of the first stories written about the Red Hot Chili Peppers' I'm With You, Rolling Stone's David Fricke referred to the disc as the band's "comeback album," a phrase that would seem to make sense to most people, considering it was not only the band's first effort in five years, but also their first since the departure of longtime guitarist John Frusciante.

It should be noted, however, that RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis is not "most people." Because to him, while I'm With You is many different things, it most certainly isn't a comeback. "What did we come back from? Malaria?" he laughed. "Maybe [Fricke meant it] in the traditional sense of the word, like 'coming back' from our break. ... But [words like] 'comeback,' 'reunion,' I don't know. We took a moment to reflect and consider the possibilities, and we're really fortunate Josh [Klinghoffer] was available and wanting to join forces with us. ... We didn't really ever lose full momentum, so it wasn't like we disbanded and re-banded, we just got kind of flotatious and then reformed together in a new configuration. 'Comeback' sounds like you quit and then started again, we didn't quite quit." "Quite" is the operative word. After all, I'm With You comes after a lengthy two-year hiatus and an even longer bout of soul-searching. "It's the first time the band took more than a couple months off probably in the last 10 years," new guitarist Klinghoffer said. Anthony Keidis told us he feels like RHCP are a "new band" on I'm With You. While they never seriously considered calling it quits, even Kiedis will admit that the Peppers' break was necessary. In fact, it probably helped save the band. Because when they finally emerged from their hibernation, with a new member and a new lease on life, they were rejuvenated, reloaded and — most important of all — reborn. Which is why, though Kiedis won't call I'm With You a "comeback album," he's got no shortage of other adjectives to describe it and the newfound joy it's brought him and his bandmates. "It does feel incredibly fresh, and I feel as excited or more excited about this period — from the writing to the recording to the playing to the anticipation of going on tour — as I've ever felt about anything that we've done, from the beginning," he said. "Sitting here, doing these interviews, listening to Josh, I often just go into a daydream of playing these songs live, and it's the same feeling that I got in 1983, when I couldn't sleep the night before a show, and if I did fall asleep, I would have a surreal little dream about the show itself; and, you know, I still have that feeling about this record and the inevitability of playing live, and kind of dreaming of set-list possibilities. ... It's a good feeling."

Linkin Park? U2? Ke$ha? Behind MTV's Musical March Madness Selection1659479

With the tipoff of our tournament set for Monday, Bigger Than the Sound breaks down your favorite band's chances of busting the bracket.
By James Montgomery

Last year, when we launched the inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, we did it largely on a whim. As I wrote when I revealed my original (handwritten) bracket, the basic idea was to combine my love of college basketball, gambling and rock music (and superfluous lists) into one magical event, and it really didn't matter that I hadn't figured out how bands would advance in the tournament or even what they'd get for winning. All I knew was that it seemed like a fun idea (especially since I didn't have anything else to write my column about that week) and that somewhere, there had to be someone who cared about these seemingly disparate things nearly as much as I did.

As it turned out, there were a lot of people who cared, and when it was all said and done — thanks to the efforts of a whole lot of folks, including Newsroom blog editor Kyle Anderson, who basically decided "You know what? People should vote on this!" — not only was Musical March Madness a certified success, but we somehow even managed to get an actual trophy to present to the winners, Coheed and Cambria, too. So, really, everybody won. Of course, given the success of the original MMM, attention quickly shifted to the 2011 tournament. Last year, I basically just threw together a list of 64 bands (65, actually; who could forget the epic Against Me!/ Creed play-in battle?). For the 2011 tournament, however, I did research, monitored album sales and basically became a Selection Committee of one. And, yes, it took way longer than I ever could have imagined. So, with the 2011 Musical March Madness set to tip off Monday — when we reveal our full bracket of 64 bands and launch voting in first-round matchups — I decided to pull back the curtain on that selection process. Some teams have all but locked up their spots in the 2011 tournament, while others still have some work to do. In the spirit of all things bracketological, here's my up-to-the-minute look at where your favorite bands stand for this year's MMM: The #1 Seeds
The biggest bands in the land. Last year, I gave out #1's to Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink-182 and the Kings of Leon. Somewhat surprisingly, three-quarters of them ended up losing in the opening round of the tournament (only Blink survived, making it to the round of 32 before losing to 30 Seconds to Mars). Obviously, I overestimated the popularity of some of those acts, which means that, in 2011, to be a #1 seed, you have to have proven yourself as not only a rock-solid commodity, but an actual threat to win the championship too. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to have an album either in stores or coming soon. So here are my latest contenders for top seeds: » Foo Fighters
» 30 Seconds to Mars
» Linkin Park
» My Chemical Romance
» Arcade Fire
» Vampire Weekend
» Muse
» The Black Keys
» Blink-182
» Radiohead
» Coldplay
» Mumford & Sons The Foos have a hotly anticipated album coming down the pipeline, as does Coldplay. Are expectations enough to make them #1's? Or will the committee recognize the breakout success of the Black Keys, Muse and Mumford? Does a #1 album and a shocking Grammy win earn the Arcade Fire a top seed? Linkin Park and MCR both scuffed a bit with their latest albums, but does that matter, especially since they're both legacy acts with loyal fanbases (and, in the case of My Chem, are tournament-tested)? And will the committee ignore the fact that, by most accounts, Radiohead's latest was a bit of a letdown or that Blink-182 may never actually release their new album? As you can see, there are still plenty of questions left to be answered. The Old Guard
Legacy acts with something left in the tank. In 2010, time-tested faves like Slipknot, the White Stripes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Pearl Jam, U2 and the Dave Matthews Band all got invites to the big dance based largely on reputation alone (just think of them as the Dukes or Kansases of MMM). Of course, nearly all of them got knocked off in the first round, which means that this time around, reputation isn't going to be enough to punch their tickets. Shoot, some of these acts aren't even around anymore, which means that some deck-shuffling is in order. Here are the established acts that are still fighting for their tournament lives: » Green Day
» Dave Matthews Band
» U2
» Red Hot Chili Peppers
» Rage Against the Machine
» Kid Rock
» Pearl Jam
» R.E.M. Some (like the Chili Peppers and U2) have announced new albums this year, while others (like DMB) are planning to take 2011 off entirely. Still, whatever their status may be, the old guard remain forces at the cash registers and on radio, even if their latest albums didn't exactly light the world on fire. And ignoring that entirely just isn't possible. So how does the committee decide which make the field of 64? Good question. I'm still trying to figure out the answer. The New Blood
Upset-minded young guns. The 2010 MMM featured up-and-coming acts like the Young Veins, 3OH!3, Owl City and MGMT. One year later, none of them are even on the radar. Picking new bands for MMM is always a challenge, though in 2011, there seem to be a handful who have all but secured their spots in the tournament, thanks to their breakout successes. I'm talking about the likes of: » Mumford & Sons
» Florence and the Machine
» The Black Keys
» Cage the Elephant
» Sleigh Bells
» Adele If the tournament started today, all of the above have been in (and some may even earn high seeds). But do any of them have enough to actually win the tournament? We'll just have to wait and see. The Bracket Busters
Bands with solid, if not spectacular, résumés (weak out-of-conference schedules, etc.). Last year, this included eventual champs Coheed and Cambria, Final Four acts like Tokio Hotel, Elite Eight bands like Panic! at the Disco and Owl City, and even Patrick Stump, who rumbled all the way to the Sweet 16. In other words, the 2011 champion could very well come from this group. Here's my list of under-the-radar threats: » Panic! (once again)
» Weezer
» The Decemberists
» Cake
» Paramore
» Avril Lavigne
» Crystal Bowersox
» Adam Lambert
» Death Cab for Cutie
» All Time Low Two of the above — Cake and the Decemberists — have recent #1 debuts under their belts, while others have new albums on the horizon (DCFC, ATL, Avril). Others, like Bowersox and Lambert (who made the Sweet 16 last year), command insane fanbases, which make them dangerous on any day. Lavigne and ATL still have some work to do, but I'd consider all of the acts I just mentioned as safe for now. The Bubble Bands
On-the-verge acts that need a little help to make it in. Maybe they win their conference championship, or maybe they PayPal the selection committee some cash, but these are the bands on the brink. In 2010, that included Panic! (no new album or single), the Gaslight Anthem (up-and-comers just learning to play together) and Coheed (largely ignored by mainstream radio). Most of those bands managed to do quite well in the tournament, while others, like Hollywood Undead, Lil Wayne, Them Crooked Vultures and the National, all flamed out in the tournament's opening round. Somewhat fittingly, it's a real feast-or-famine type of thing. Here's my updated list of bubble bands: » Cobra Starship
» Ke$ha
» Tokio Hotel
» MGMT
» Train
» Adele
» Bret Michaels
» Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
» Taylor Swift Right off the bat, neither Ke$ha nor Swift really rock (though Ke$h does use Jack Daniels as mouthwash), which makes them long shots. Tokio Hotel have done next to nothing since last year's tournament, but was their success enough to earn them a spot this year? Bret Michaels is basically indestructible at this point, so I'd consider him a lock. Cobra Starship are largely dormant but command a big enough fanbase to warrant consideration. MGMT's last album stiffed in spectacular fashion, which places them squarely on the soapy surface of the bubble. So, will your favorite band make the cut for the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament? As you can see, the Selection Committee still has plenty of work to do — which means that, between now and Monday, I'll be burning the midnight oil, busting out the brackets and then re-busting them once again. It'll be a chore, but I bet it will be worth it. And I hope you'll be along for the ride. Your band needs you, after all. MTV's 2011 Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 14, when we reveal the full field of 64 bands that will battle for the championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act makes the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get
