Obama Campaign Playlist Includes Wilco, U2, Al Green

Ricky Martin, Bruce Springsteen, Dierks Bentley and Sugarland also in the mix.

We already know President Obama likes to listen to (and occasionally sing) Al Green songs. And he's told us that his iPod has a bit of Jay-Z and Lil Wayne on it. But with the toughest re-election campaign of his career on the horizon, what music will Obama 2012 be using to pump up crowds at rallies?

Judging by a playlist uploaded to Spotify this week, it looks like a cheerful, noncontroversial mix of classic rock, country, soul and R&B, but, alas, no hip-hop. Instead, in a clear bid to appeal to the broad middle, Obama chose songs by beloved soul acts like Booker T. & the MG's ("Green Onions"), Earth Wind & Fire ("Got to Get You Into My Life"), The Impressions ("Keep on Pushing") and, yes, Green (the pleading "Let's Stay Together"). From the rock pile, he went with Wilco ("I Got You"), Arcade Fire ("We Used to Wait"), U2 ("Even Better Than the Real Thing") and the new blue-collar recession anthem from Bruce Springsteen ("We Take Care of Our Own"). For those visits to the heartland, he loaded up on country goodness from Sugarland ("Stand Up" and "Everyday America"), Darius Rucker ("This"), Zac Brown Band ("Keep Me in Mind") and Dierks Bentley ("Home"). There are a few oddball picks in there as well, including a deep cut from No Doubt ("Different People"), a very literal AM radio staple from REO Speedwagon ("Roll with the Changes"), a cover of the Band's "The Weight" by Aretha Franklin, some indie rock from Noah and the Whale ("Tonight's the Kind of Night") and a Ricky Martin/ Joss Stone duet ("The Best Thing About Me Is You"). While likely GOP opponent Mitt Romney takes the stage to the rousing strains of Kid Rock's Americana anthem "Born Free," Obama plans to get crowds pumped with the likes of modern R&B master Raphael Saadiq ("Keep Marchin' "), Florence and the Machine ("You've Got the Love") and afro-era prog popsters Electric Light Orchestra ("Mr. Blue Sky").

Rounding out the list is obscure jam act AgesAndAges, whose "No Nostalgia" is a handclapping ditty that just begs for a group hug, Jennifer Hudson's "Love You I Do," Ledisi's self-explanatory "Raise Up," James Taylor's feel-good "Your Smiling Face," country duo Montgomery Gentry's small-town homage "My Town" and Ray LaMontagne's tear-in-your-beer lovefest "You Are the Best Thing." It might sound tame, but don't forget that back in 2008 when he was still just Candidate Obama, the president's taste in music was pretty similar. At the time, the future boomer-in-chief said he listened to everything from Bob Dylan, Elton John, Earth Wind & Fire and the Rolling Stones to Sheryl Crow, Springsteen and a number of jazz and classic giants, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Yo-Yo Ma. What songs would you add to the president's playlist? Let us know in comments below! Check back for up-to-the-minute coverage of the primaries and stick with PowerOf12.org throughout the 2012 presidential election season.

Black Keys Drummer Says Nickelback Are 'Crap'

Patrick Carney blames the band for ruining rock and roll in interview with Rolling Stone.

Having already spent a portion of 2011 taking Twitter shots at Lady Gaga, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney is kicking off 2012 with another feud ... only this time, he's setting his sights on Nickleback.

In the new issue of <a href=http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/cover-story-excerpt-the-black-keys-20120104" target="_blank">Rolling Stone, Carney laments the current state of rock music (which, admittedly, is rather dire) and places the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Canadian quartet, whom he believes have ruined the genre with their "watered-down, post-grunge crap." "Rock and roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world," he says. "So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be sh--. Therefore, you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. F--- that! Rock and roll is the music I feel the most passionate about, and I don't like to see it f---ing ruined and spoon-fed down our throats [with] this ... horrendous sh--. When people start lumping us into that kind of sh--, it's like 'F--- you,' honestly." Maybe he hasn't heard "Bottoms Up." Of course, in the interview, Carney was equally harsh on himself, saying he "suck[s] at the drums" and admitting that he agrees with most folks who call him awkward. But the most savage of his criticisms are definitely directed toward Nickelback. (A spokesperson for the band did not respond to MTV News' request for comment.) We may be witnessing the birth of our first great rock feud. Though 2012 is just five days old, it looks like it's going to be a big year indeed. Whose side are you on in the brewing rock and roll feud? Sound off in the comments below!

Conrad Murray Sentence 'Not Enough,' MJ Fans Say

But other Michael Jackson supporters outside L.A. courthouse tell MTV News 'justice has been served.'
By Katie Byrne, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf

Conrad Murray looks on during the final stage of Conrad Murray's defense in his involuntary manslaughter trial in the death of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 1, 2011

LOS ANGELES — During the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's fans have been as much a fixture at the courthouse as the Jackson family. When Murray was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday (November 29), MTV News spoke with those loyal fans outside the court to see if the maximum sentence was an apt punishment.

"Four years — not enough, but at least something," said one fan, sporting a red jacket in tribute to MJ. "And where I come from, a little something is always better than nothing." One pair of friends might have been wearing matching Thriller T-shirts, but their opinions on Murray's sentence certainly didn't match. "If four years is the maximum and he got the maximum — I know she's not happy, but I'm happy," one of the women said, gesturing to her less-than-pleased companion. "I feel like justice was served and that L.A. can now be proud and stand tall." "It's better than nothing, but it's not even close to justice," said another fan, wearing Jackson's trademark fedora and sequined glove. "Not only was [Murray] negligent; he let the man die. It's unconscionable. He didn't even try. How would a heart doctor not know how to give CPR? It's insane." The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. On top of that, legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that Murray will likely serve less than half of his four-year sentence. Those legal loopholes concerned a female fan outside the courthouse, but she was also happy that the maximum punishment was doled out. "The only thing I'm worried about now, with the overcrowding of the jails, he might get one year and house arrest," she told MTV News. "I'm just hoping it'll be four years, that's what I'm praying. I'm just glad that justice has been served today, and I'm glad justice can be served to the family and to the fans, and everybody around today will be happy and celebrate that justice has been served. And I'm sure Michael's looking from heaven right now."

Audrina Patridge, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert Share Prom Memories

'Me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m.,' Ke$ha tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

It's prom season, and that means high schoolers across this great land will be renting tuxes, buying fancy dresses and negotiating the details of their curfews with parents. So, before you take your pictures and get in your limos, we asked some Hollywood A-listers to recall their fondest prom memories. "I had a great prom," Ne-Yo told MTV News. "I didn't get to go with who I wanted to go with. I got my second choice, but my second choice turned out to be the one I was supposed to be there with, so it turned out good."

Ke$ha, never one to say no to a party, had the best night of all her friends. "I went to prom with my gay best friend, and let me tell you, I had way more fun than anybody else at a prom with their boyfriends," she recalled. "Everybody else was, like, crying and drama and breaking up, and me and my gay best friend just danced until 8 a.m." "Hellcats" star Aly Michalka doesn't have a favorite prom memory — because she never went to prom. "I was homeschooled, so I don't even think we had a fake prom," she lamented. "Like, maybe we had a home-school prom and I wasn't invited?" While everything always seems to be in peril on "The Vampire Diaries," star Nina Dobrev had a less tumultuous night: "Having everyone get together and such a final celebration [is what I remember]." Romeo went big for his prom. "My senior prom, I remember I pulled up in my red Ferrari. I was feeling like James Bond," he said. "And it was one of the best nights of my life." "My favorite prom memory was probably going shopping for a dress, and our boyfriends at the time dressed up as 'Dumb & Dumber,' " Audrina Patridge laughed. "And so we were like, 'We can't dress up dorky ... we have to look good.' " Roots drummer ?uestlove made a big decision on the night of his prom: "June 2, 1989, was my very last haircut; prom haircut, totally butchered my hair. He butchered my hair, and I vowed never again to ever get in a barber chair, so I grew that Afro on my prom night." Adam Lambert said his prom date was a 10, so he definitely had a fun night. "I had a great prom. I had an awesome time," he said. "I went with one of my best friends in high school. Her name was Lauren, and she was really hot. She wore a really hot red dress, so I felt like I had arm candy." Share your prom memories in the comments below!

Oscars 2012: Winners And Losers

From Emma Stone to Angelina Jolie's right leg, MTV News relives the best and worst of Sunday night's show.
By Eric Ditzian

Emma Stone arrives at the 84th annual Academy Awards
Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic

The winners of the 2012 Oscars have already been announced. Those lucky men and women have already gone off, gleaming statuettes in hand, to jump from celeb-filled party to celeb-filled party and learn how to carry a champagne glass in one hand and an Academy Award in the other without spilling the former and breaking the latter.

But the official winners' list only tells part of the story of Sunday night's show. There were nipples that might have slipped, legs that poked bizarrely out and an ash-filled urn malfunction on the red carpet. There were front-runners who fell short and dark horses who pulled out unexpected victories. Who were the true winners and losers at the Oscars this year? Let's take a look...

Winner: Billy Crystal
Hauled out from some cryogenic awards-show freezer where time does not pass and wrinkles are not allowed to crease one's face, Crystal emerged onto the Oscar stage for the ninth time ... and didn't make us fall asleep. Much to our surprise, he was consistently funny (and at times, shockingly and thankfully, a tad mean), and delivered a bunch of LOL-worthy video bits.

Loser: Anne Hathaway and James Franco
Remember when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences thought it needed to get all edgy, recruiting two hot young things to helm the biggest night in Hollywood? Hollywood, in turn, hated them. The ghosts of Hathaway and Franco's phoned-in performances could be seen every time Crystal belted out a parody tune or a Borscht Belt zinger to the sustained guffaws of his audience.

Winner: Jennifer Lopez's nipple
It was the singer's most talked-about release in at least a decade. And it may not have actually, ya know, been released from beneath her dress.

Loser: Angelina Jolie's right leg
'Cause, seriously, that was just weird.

Winner: The screenwriter who made fun of Angelina Jolie's right leg
After the "Descendants" won Best Adapted Screenplay, Jim Rash (who also happens to be a series regular on "Community") took to the stage and thrust his leg out in silent, searing mockery of Jolie's prominently displayed body part.

Winner: Emma Stone
She can sing, she can bust into an awesome old-timey voice, she can make fun of Ben Stiller and he'll just take it. The evening was filled with surprisingly funny presenters, but Stone's shtick won the night. Casting directors, listen up: Get that girl a big-screen musical stat!

Winner: Octavia Spencer
Long an awards-season darling, "The Help" ended up only nabbing a single Oscar. Best Supporting Actress winner Spencer made the best of the opportunity, breaking down in tears during a heartfelt acceptance speech in which she thanked everyone from her castmates to the state of Alabama.

Loser: Meryl Streep
Though she won Best Actress — which, according to our estimates, was the 37th Oscar win of her career — even Streep herself appeared sheepish to have swiped the category away from front-runner Viola Davis.

Winner: Sacha Baron Cohen
Handed the gift of a temporary ban from the Academy because he planned to walk the red carpet as his character from "The Dictator," Baron Cohen played the PR war game perfectly, releasing an amusing YouTube video before the show and then, after the Academy relented, spilling the faux-ashes of Kim Jong Il on Ryan Seacrest during a red-carpet interview.

Loser: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
The academy not only proved it had no sense of humor when it banned Baron Cohen, but showed it had no spine when it reinstated him and ended up posting his image on the front page of its Oscar website.

Loser: Michael Douglas
While it was great to see Douglas out on stage and looking so healthy after his battle with cancer, everyone was disappointed that his dad wasn't the one standing in front of the cameras. Then 94-year-old Kirk Douglas' show-stealing intro at last year's Oscars was bizarre and uncomfortable and kinda amazing.

Winner: Zach Galifianakis' inability to pronounce Zach Galifianakis' name
The white tux-clad presenter, perhaps reaching out to Michel Hazanavicius, his brother in unpronounceable surnames, butchered his own family name in the middle of a memorable bit with Will Ferrell.

Winner: The women of "Bridesmaids"
They may not have won an award, but their continuing bit about a Martin Scorsese drinking game was hilarious. And the fact that they were able to bring some humor to the shorts categories — comparing them to the male anatomy — was an impressive feat.

Loser: Bradley Cooper's mustache
Cooper might be the reigning Sexiest Man Alive, but his lip fuzz stood out as the night's creepiest collection of facial hair.

Loser: Bubba Smith
Every year, a handful of beloved actors are left off Oscar's "In Memoriam" montage. In 2012, poor Bubba Smith, who memorably played Hightower in the "Police Academy" movies and who passed away in August at the age of 66, didn't make the cut.

Who do you think were the biggest winners and losers of the night? Leave your comment below!

The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Keep it locked at MTV.com for updates on the night's big winners and the best red-carpet fashion.

I'm here! I'm here! And I saw my first gang-banger get arrested yesterday so I feel like a total Angeleno.

I'm getting ready to go to the gym (again, like a total Angeleno!) so I will update later about my run-ins with Alexander Skarsgard, Pauly Shore, and Jeremy or Jason London (I'm not sure which one it was and seeing if I could force him to do drugs to find out seemed unfair. Besides, as it turned out, he was telling the truth?)

Anyhoo, I've got a lot to tell you about gardening! (Did you know if you get dirt wet it turns into mud? Yuck.)

And bumpers! (They don't bump off anything... they go, "Scraaaaaaaatch!")

And there's probably more but, again, I have to go because I have to get to the gym!

Britney Spears' Big 2011: From A Smash Album To A Ring On Her Finger

A decade into her career, the pop megastar reinvented herself this year as the ultimate Femme Fatale and made a big commitment to Jason Trawick.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears

Maybe Britney Spears' lucky number is 30. The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned the Best Britney Video of All Time. But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career.

For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a Femme Fatale, giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it's probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News' Top Newsmakers of 2011 list, just behind Lil Wayne. "When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative," she recalled in the MTV special "I Am the Femme Fatale." "That's when my mom realized I'm a really creative person." She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. From "Hold It Against Me" to "Till the World Ends" to her Chris Marrs Piliero-directed "I Wanna Go" and "Criminal," Britney made headlines every time she dropped a music video. But no vid stirred up as much controversy as her "Criminal" clip, which featured real-life boyfriend (now fiancé) Jason Trawick — and his abs. "At the end of the day, Jason killed it," Piliero told MTV News of Trawick's cameo. "That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was." Between video shoots, Spears hit the road with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Joe Jonas, and DJ Pauly D. She also had tongues wagging after an onstage kiss from Jo (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), just before she was honored with an electrifying dance tribute that highlighted some of biggest career moments. "It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect," Spears told us backstage at the VMAs. "The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!' " As 2011 came to a close, Spears wrapped up her tour, and MTV News threw her a birthday bash in the form of the "30 Videos for 30 Years" tournament. Usher's Next Album 'Soulful, Catchy,' Taio Cruz Teases

'He always wants there to be the soul in there,' Cruz tells MTV News about his 'Without You' collaborator.

Usher is hard at work on his next album. Set to work with fellow hitmaker Taio Cruz, the two already cooked up some magic with their David Guetta anthem "Without You," and it seems they are hoping to recapture that spirit for Usher's follow-up to 2010's Raymond v. Raymond.

"I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise." Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.' "So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added. Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret." Usher said he was drawn to the Guetta hit because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is."

Oscars 2012 Ratings Up From Last Year

Ratings for Sunday night's telecast up 4 percent over 2011's show.

Sometimes "meh" is all you need — especially when you're following up one of the most reviled Oscar hosting teams in recent memory.

That might explain why, despite a night devoid of any major surprises or blockbuster winners, ratings for the 2012 Oscars telecast were up slightly over last year.

According to ABC's preliminary ratings, the Billy Crystal-hosted awards show had a 25.5 rating and 37 share, a 4 percent increase over the 2011 show, which famously bombed thanks to the lack of chemistry between hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Crystal's safe-as-milk ninth go-round as host earned the veteran comedian mostly tepid to negative reviews, but it was enough to boost the big night to one of its best ratings nights since 2007, when the show put up a 27.7 rating and 42 share.

The highest-ever Oscar ratings came in 1998, when the global blockbuster "Titanic" helped draw in more than 55 million viewers.

Ratings might have been even higher if any of the most-nominated movies had posted solid box-office figures as well. But between them, the leading winners, "The Artist" and "Hugo," which both reveled in a nostalgic look back at the dawn of the modern movie era, have grossed just over $100 million combined to date. To put that in perspective, popcorn flick "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," which was blanked in three technical categories, brought in nearly that much in its opening weekend.

More complete ratings numbers are expected later in the day on Monday (February 27).

The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Keep it locked at MTV.com for updates on the night's big winners and the best red-carpet fashion.

Rolling Stones, U2, Madonna Are Top Touring Acts Of The Decade

Stones concerts raked in $869 million in the 2000s, according to Billboard.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who saw one of their multiple massive tours that classic rockers the Rolling Stones topped Billboard magazine's list of Top Touring Artists of the 2000s. What's shocking, though, is that the Mick Jagger and company are just one of three acts that raked in more than $800 million from 2000-2009. Unstoppable touring juggernauts the Stones took the #1 slot with more than $869 million in grosses for 264 shows that played to more than 8.2 million fans over the past decade, followed closely behind by U2, who banked $844 million from more than 9.8 million fans for 288 shows, all of which were sold-out. The latter is an honor none of the other acts on the list can boast of. Madonna, the top-grossing female artist, rounded out the $800 million club with grosses of more than $801 million for 248 shows (244 sold-out) that played to 6.3 million fans. The top five was filled out by road hog Bruce Springsteen ($688 million, 403 shows with 248 sell-outs in front of 8.6 million fans) and Elton John ($604 million, 541 shows with 470 sell-outs in front of 5.8 million fans). Among the other notables on the list: #6 Celine Dion ($537 million for 792 shows that played to 4.1 million) and the Dave Matthews Band, which had the highest audience figures on the list, with 11.2 million attending 547 shows (282 sell-outs) for a #7 ranking and a $505 million gross. Country superstar Kenny Chesney was at #8 ($478 million, 622 shows, 9.2 million fans), followed by Bon Jovi (#9, $419 million, 249 shows, 5.4 million fans) and piano man Billy Joel (#10, $418 million, 241 shows, 4.1 million fans). Reunited '80s act the Police were at #11 ($362 million, 144 shows, 3.3 million fans), just ahead of the perennially touring Eagles ($348 million, 240 shows, 3.1 million fans). Troubled rockers Aerosmith were not far behind (#14, $292 million, 320 shows with only 61 sell-outs to 4.6 million), and Metallica came in at #19 ($228 million, 187 shows, 3.6 million fans). The only (relatively) contemporary act to crack the top 25 was Britney Spears, who landed at #21 with $216 million in grosses on 255 shows that drew 3.7 million fans.

Clearly, the holiday season is upon us. How do we know? Crooner Michael Buble's five-week-old Christmas album will sneak into the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart thanks to sales of 227,000, leapfrogging over a pair of new releases. Just a hair back at #2 is Nickelback's Here and Now, which moved just under 227,000 copies and Rihanna's Talk That Talk, which hit #3 after selling 198,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

Also debuting in the top 10 were Mary J. Blige's : My Life II ... The Journey Continues
(#5, 156,000) and Daughtry's Break the Spell (#8, 129,000). The rest of the top 10: Drake, Take Care (#4, 173,000, down 73 percent), Justin Bieber, Under the Mistletoe (#6, 142,000), Adele, 21 (#7, 140,000), Scotty McCreery, Clear as Day (#9, 88,000) and Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto (#10, 79,000). Just outside the top 10, Taylor Swift came in at #11 with Speak Now World Tour Live (77,000), just ahead of new boy band TV hotties Big Time Rush, whose Elevate was at #12 thanks to sales of 70,000. The soundtrack to the new Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil show, Immortal, landed at #24 (43,000), while new Shady crew member Yelawolf was back at #27 with Radioactive (41,000). "American Idol" finalist rocker James Durbin squeaked into the top 40 at #36 with his debut, Memories of a Beautiful Disaster (28,000). A number of top 40 acts seemed to be getting a holiday boost, including Maroon 5 (up 44 spots and 351 percent to #20), Lady Gaga (up 51 spots and 416 percent to #21), Selena Gomez & The Scene (up 39 spots and 248 percent to #31) and Nicki Minaj (up 47 spots and 250 percent to #50). While Gaga's Born This Way continues to move units, fans were a bit less interested in her A Very Gaga Holiday digital EP, which landed with a thunk at #51 on modest sales of 22,000. While she didn't reach the top on Billboard, Rihanna did manage to hit #1 on the iTunes album charts, where she beat out Drake, Nickelback, Coldplay and Buble. At #6 was Adele, followed by Daughtry, Blige, Gaga's Thanksgiving album and a greatest hits disc from Motor City rocker Bob Seger. LMFAO ruled the iTunes singles chart with "Sexy and I Know It," which beat out "It Will Rain" from Bruno Mars, Rihanna's "We Found Love," Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" and Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away." Rounding out the list were: Adele, "Someone Like You," Maroon 5, "Moves Like Jagger," Gym Class Heroes, "Stereo Hearts," David Guetta, "Without You" and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem." Next week's newcomers include Hot Chelle Rae Trey Songz, and live CD/DVDs from Adele and Beyonce.
